From the StarTribune: "Our community will be asked to cast an essential vote on Nov. 6. Please take this opportunity to show your support of all children in the district, those in school now as well as those whose first day will come years from now. Please vote in favor of the Levy For Learning."  Levy

I'll probably support the school levy, but the fact that this is coming up as we got notice today of the proposal for the new city maintenance and park facilities bodes ill.

As a matter of financial responsibility it is always a good idea to check out where and how the money is being spent. The Westonka school district spends (12,136.00) nearly $1600. and/ or 15% more than our closest spending neighbor being Orono and yet our ACT scores are considerably lower, why? Last year the school district asked for $58 Million for a building bond and it failed 2:1 in the referendum. This year the School district is AGAIN asking for more money in a levy. The school board in it's meeting of July,'07 said it needed $114. per student to maintain classes/ programs in '08. Unfortunately, the board is choosing to ask for $345.00 per student= $877,000.00 per year for 10 years with an inflation allowance allowed from years 2 and on. My colleagues and I believe that A "Levy" may be needed , but NOT THIS LEVY. an appropriate levy would be for the amount needed with an allowance/ buffer of 10-15% for the 10 years and with an inflation factor allowed from years 2 and on. The levy passed, and it was the height of irony to receive in the mail a joint marketing effort from the school and Domino's Pizza. Don't they know I can't afford to get pizza now that the levy passed? My money is being contributed to the $877,000 (base line, mind you, before inflation increases) and it isn't in my budget to contribute to the school in yet another form via pizza.
