Notable Notary Services

Westonka Schools Superintendent Kevin Borg writes in this week's Laker of the district's custom of providing free notary service to district residents. They did this for Sheryl Hill in relation to her recent legal action against Citizens for Common Sense. If this wasn't news as Borg writes, it was still something that has been talked about to the possible detriment of those favoring the Levy and Bond.

My concern is the possible lawsuit if something goes wrong with a notarization. This is "district provided" in Borg's words, and logically the district's responsibility if a mistake is made. I think it's reasonable to ask that our school district not take on this unneeded risk.

I too provide notary services. For me it's just a way to build a little goodwill with my clients.

Actually, if you read statute Fair Campaign Practice 211A it is the responsibility of the filing officer, in this case, the school clerk, to notify the OAH of a failure to file a financial report. When I spoke with the OAH staff attorney, Mary Beth Gossman, she confirmed this. When I went for the notarization, the school clerk phoned the OAH hearings and spoke to a Staff Attorney named Marie who also confirmed that the filing officer, aka district clerk, could and should notarize the document. The Notch's brought up the notarization as if it were an espionage plan to destroy their no campaign. It's not. It's just me - Sheryl Hill - 2 doors down from the Notch's. No worries.

Judge Lipman dismissed the complaint against the no group, and referenced two similar cases.

It's interesting that not one Statute 211B.06 case has ever been awarded to a complainant. I was cautioned about that after I filed, so there is no surprise here.

I am 'relieved' that the no group corrected their tax projections for the Levy closer to reality (29% lower), although Sen Olson and the District believe it is still 'off'. Sen Olson also had a very real analogy of why she believe you can't calculate the estimate the way the no group did. I would be happy to send it to you if you are interested.

My ultimate goal was to get the tax projections from the no group closer to reality. It worked on the levy, not on the bond. Perhaps I should have started my own political action committee and calculated the tax the other way, with more development and school age kids sharing the burden to lower our taxes because our award winning schools attract them.

This has been a very big learning experience for me. I am very chagrined that our schools don't have the free speech that I think they need to represent the kids. It would make for a more colorful campaign, certainly.

It really is amazing how a complete lack of shame represents itself.

The only person with obvious and distinct contempt for free speech rights is Sheryl Hill.

I hope the public becomes aware of these dirty tricks and vote accordingly.

To people who worry about "our kids" I know if we could get a head count 99.99% of the public would agree with me when I say:

      Worry about your own kids

      Our kids are our kids.

And what's really interesting about Fair Campaign Practice 211A is that someone has such contempt for civil discourse to try to use Fair Campaign Practice 211A to attempt to stifle debate and impose her own opinions on the rest of us.

Another thing that would be interesting is what the school administration and school board would be saying behind closed doors about the person who perpetrated this ham-handed dirty trick if this referendum is voted down.

I imagine right now they are screaming into their pillows "Get off our side!"
